Desert Willow and Sphinx Moth 122 (IMG_2691)

Desert Willow and Sphinx Moth 122 (IMG_2691)

Desert willow is not a willow at all; its botanical name is Chilopsis linearis ssp. arcuata. The leaves resemble willows but these trees are related to Jacarandas. I happened upon a group of these trees during a weekend foray into the desert. From a distance I did not realize they would be flowering it was September. As I ventured closer I noticed that they were in flower and I thought I saw humming birds swarming the flowers. Upon closer inspection I realized that I was mistaken and sphinx moths were gathering nectar. I took photos with my fancy 35 mm digital camera and my phone, I chose this image taken with my phone!
