Erythrina sandwicensis 125 (IMG_8104)

Erythrina sandwicensis 125 (IMG_8104)

Erythrina sandwicensis or the williwili tree is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Previously these were known as the Sandwich Islands, the name given to them by James Cook in 1778. The wiliwili tree still bears this old moniker as part of its botanical name. The tree here is on Maui on the Piilani Highway on the south side of the island. This is the arid side and there are other plants that are adapted for these drier conditions. Unfortunately I missed the fantastic flower display of red-orange flowers.
